Scripps Coastal Reserve

The goal of this project is to utilize high-resolution orthomosaic mapping to create detailed habitat maps of Scripps Coastal Reserve (SCR), and assess the vulnerability of its rocky intertidal to sea level rise (SLR). Rocky intertidal communities in southern California ecologically, economically, and culturally important contributing greatly to the resource value of our coastline. However, these communities are also under threat from sea level rise and impacts associated with changing oceanographic conditions. This project will use novel imaging/mapping technology to maximize data acquisition in the field and will produce archival data sets to inform adaptive management of marine protected areas within California in the future. This project will also yield outreach tools and visualizations that can be used by researchers and reserve staff to encourage community involvement and conservation of intertidal ecosystems.
