Repeat of UCSD class SIO15 Natural Hazards beachwalks as done in past 15 years. This field trip takes my class SIO15 Natural Disasters in small groups to the SIO beach to discuss natural hazards specific to the San Diego area. First, we will discuss the general geological setting, seismic faults and related seismic hazards. This will be done from the SIO pier to get a better overall comprehension of the local cliff geography. On the way to the beach, we will discuss seasonal variations in the beach, and the interplay between ocean currents and strom waves. On the beach, we will discuss hazards specific to the cliffs and measures how to protect the cliffs and prevent cliff collapse. class activities: class activities: 1) environmental manipulation: our field trip will be mostly on the SIO pier; we then go down to the beach; the field trip ends on the beach below the IGPP building; as far as environmental impact is concerned, we will walk on the sand, i.e. disturb the sand; we will go to the waterline and stomp on the water-saturated sand for a few times to study how water-saturated sand liquefies; we will also go to the water outlet by Hubbs hall to study meanders; we will demonstrate by pushing our foot in the outer bank of a meander how easy it is to cause slumping area of reserve: we will view and discuss the cliffs from the SIO pier; we will then go on the beach, first to the waterline beneath the pier, then to the outlet by Hubbs Hall; then continue to the undercut beneath the IGPP building where our field trips ends; we will not collect any samples nor data; there will be a total of 7 instructors (Laske and 6 TAs) that will taking a class of 340 in groups of 20 to the beach, at various times; we will primarily come on the weekends of Oct 20 and Nov 3; at no time will there be more than 4 groups at the same time. RESERVATIONS: exact time slot to be determined in the general time period between 10-20 through 11-6; time slots depend on availability of students, and past experience is that students cancel/change at the last minute; each visit of a group of tour guide plus 20 students will last for a total of 90 min (60 min on the SIO pier, 30 min on the beach); a tentative schedule is as follows: Thursday, October 18, 12:30-14:00 PDT; with TBD Saturday, October 20, 13:00-14:30 PDT; with TBD Saturday, October 20, 13:30-15:00 PDT; with TBD Saturday, October 20, 14:00-15:30 PDT; with TBD Sunday, October 21, 13:30-15:00 PDT; with TBD Sunday, October 21, 14:00-15:30 PDT; with TBD Sunday, October 21, 14:30-16:00 PDT; with TBD Tuesday, October 23, 15:00-16:30 PDT; with TBD Tuesday, October 31, 15:30-17:00 PDT; with TBD Thursday, November 1, 11:00-12:30 PDT; with TBD Saturday, November 3, 13:00-14:30 PDT; with BD Saturday, November 3, 13:30-15:00 PDT; with TBD Sunday, November 4, 12:30-14:00 PST; with TBD Sunday, November 4, 13:30-15:00 PST; with TBD Tuesday, November 6, 14:00-15:30 PST; with TBD
