Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center

I plan to visit the reserve on August 16 and measure field indicators of flow duration at Deep Canyon and Coyote Canyon. If water is present, I will use an aquarium net to collect aquatic invertebrates (a fresh net for each site) for 10 minutes, collecting voucher specimens in ethanol for later identification. I will identify common riparian plants, looking for hydrophytic species. Voucher tissue may be collected if necessary. I will look for hydric soils in at least 3 locations at each site using a 6" trowel. I will measure stream slope using a hand-held clinometer. I will visually evaluate the remaining indicators required by the protocol, including: sinuosity, evidence of substrate sorting, presence of riffles and pools.
