This mission will take place in 2 sections of Pinyon Flats, one in the recently-burned portion of the flats and the other in the unburned portion. These flights will occur in the same locations as were used by Sofia Koutzoukis (Jenerette lab, UCR) for capturing high-resolution thermal imagery of the land surface (Burned coordinates: 33.61041, -116.4525; Unburned coordinates: 33.6067, -116.4525). On September 22, 2017, we will fly a DJI Phantom UAV on a 30x30 meter grid around each of these plot coordinates at 10m above the ground with 70-80% image overlap; each flight should take ~17 minutes and all flights will take place around midday to avoid shadows in the images. Bob Johnson (UCR Center for Conservation Biology) and I have submitted a flight request to the UC Center for UAS Safety and are currently waiting for approval; this request can be forwarded to interested parties.
