This will be a class field trip for BIOL476 Herpetology at Cal. State Fullerton. One of the goals of the class for the students to gain familiarity with Southern California reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitat. With this in mind, we would like to spend time observing local reptiles and amphibians on the reserve property. Another goal of the class is to teach students proper capture and handling techniques for herpetofauna, so I would like to give the students the opportunity to catch, identify and release lizards and non-venomous snakes in the reserve, using hand-held nooses, snake tubes, or bare hands as appropriate. I would also like to take advantage of the expertise of the Reserve staff in conservation management of desert reptiles and desert habitats in general, and have them discuss area management plans, and the consequences of various development plans on Coachella Valley herpetofauna and desert habitats.
