A class of graduate and undergraduate students who are studying Mammalogy will learn to properly set and check live-traps for nocturnal mammals. They will see live specimens of some of the native California species they have studied as study skins in the laboratory, enhancing their ability to identify the specimens. We will also discuss aspects of the ecology, physiology, behavior, and evolution of the species we capture. We would like to camp one night at the campground on the reserve. The course instructor, Dr. Donald F. Hoyt has extensive experience trapping rodents and he has an approved scientific collection permit from the California Department of Game that covers the species listed by the Boyd reserve as appearing there. Additionally, the class activity has been approved by the IACUC at Cal Poly Pomona. He will be accompanied by Dr. Glenn R. Stewart, a retired member of the Cal Poly faculty who led very similar field trips to the Boyd Reserve for decades.
