Desert tortoise ecology has been studied in a wind energy facility near Palm Springs at various times from 1997-2010. During that time, over 150 individual tortoises were captured marked and monitored in an area of just over one square mile. The objective of this study, the first of its kind, is to examine the long-term effects wind energy development and operation on the behavior, activity, and reproductive ecology of a marked population of desert tortoises. Specific objectives were to compare various ecological and behavioral attributes (survivorship, population structure and density, reproductive output) for tortoises living in the industrial landscape with published results of populations living in more natural environments using radio-telemetry and x-radiography.
