The Laboratory for Atmospheric Acoustics at the University of California San Diego is working with the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization as part of a joint effort, to monitor and detect nuclear tests. Infrasound is one of four technologies used in this detection process. The infrasound array at Pinon Flats is one of 60 stations worldwide which continously monitors atmospheric events and sends data back to a central location to be processed and studied by the CTBTO. In addition to nuclear blast detection a large number of other events can be detected with infrasound. This has given rise to numerous studies many of which the Pinon Flats array has participated in. Some of these include: volcano eruption, hurricane monitoring, bolides and various other man-made and natural events.
