We are in need of housing only at the Boyd Center. We will be researching desert tortoise behavior and movements at the Mesa Wind Energy Facility in Whitewater, California. Thus we have no research needs at the Boyd Center, only housing. We have received money from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to reinitiate tortoise research at the Mesa windfarm, in Whitewater, California. From 1997-2000 Dr. Lovich marked over 130 tortoises in just over a square mile of habitat. About half the habitat burned during the Verbenia Fire of 1995. BLM has requested an evaluation of the effects of the fire on tortoise behavior and movements almost 15 years later. Here are the dates we hope to spend in the field this spring: April 9-11 April 20-23 May 4-8 May 18-22 June 1-5 June 15-19 June 29-July 3 Depending on circumstances we may also be in the field: July 6-10 July 20-24 Initially, we will need housing for two people but there will be times when we will need housing only for Sheila.
