UC Institute for Research in the Arts together with the Luminous Green eco-arts consortium and UCR Palm Desert Graduate Center are submitting this application to hold a retreat with UC faculty and graduate students at the Boyd Deep Canyon reserve from February 14-16. Using Open Space Technology, a pro-active facilitation technique (http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/wiki.cgi?AboutOpenSpace) participants will form a series of workshops devoted to consideration of the following themes: - future desert ecologies - native desert knowledge systems - sustainable design strategies for a world without water - desert sound-scapes - desert navigation - the new desert social order. The intent is to provide an immersion experience/research opportunity for UC faculty, graduate students and affiliated artists/scholars interested in exploring the idea and practice of sustainability across various fields in a desert setting. Participants will camp in the Reserve campground and will share responsibilities of organization, cooking and discussion. We would also like to use the Boyd Center housing facilities if possible both as accommodation and in order to gain internet access. We anticipate that our impact on the Reserve's eco-systems will be minimal and will confine our activities to the campground and any other areas within the Reserve permitted/recommended by the Reserve Director and staff. We will take special care to avoid ongoing research sites. Boyd Canyon is ideal for our purposes as we wish to study the eco-systems of the lower desert with a view to formulating proposals for the nearby Palm Desert Sustainable Gardens Initiative. If this short residency/retreat proves successful in terms of educational and research outcomes we would hope to organize similar field trips/retreats in the future at the Reserve as UC Riverside's arts and interdisciplinary programs in Desert Studies evolve over time.
