The purpose of this visit is to evaluate Deep Canyon for a proposed educational weekend trip for geologists (faculty, students, and professional geologists) November 7-8, 2009. The subject of the visit is to observe the structural relations in a zone that extends nearly continuously from Palm Canyon in the north to Martinez Canyon in the south. In this area, basement rocks record ductile to brittle crustal deformation in ages from the pre-Tertiary Period to the present. A major mylonite zone records a period of ductile shear apparently related to crustal compression in the late Cretaceous. The mylonite zone is cut by at least one major detachment fault that is apparently related to the West Salton Detachment to the south. The detachment faulting records a period of extension likely related to opening of the Salton Trough in the Miocene Epoch. More recent strike-slip faulting related to San Andreas transform motion is recorded in a family of faults in a zone from the San Andreas fault in the east to the Elsinore fault in the west. Recent landsliding in various parts of resulting steep slopes may be observed in the Deep Canyon area. Some landslides may have slipped along planes of weakness coincident with previous structures. Previous work on the mylonite zones in the Deep Canyon area was performed by Bradley Erskine, Ph.D., as part of a Master of Science degree from SDSU, 1982.
