Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center

This project is similar to the project we performed last year. The purpose of this research is to determine whether the Costa's Hummingbird makes a characteristic dive-sound with its tail, or vocally. Studies of related species of hummingbirds indicate that they produce dive-sounds with their tails, indicating that the Costa's may do so as well. Wild birds will be recorded with microphones, high-speed video, and caught using mist nets or feeder traps. We will then pluck pairs of tail-feathers, mark the individual, and release it to re-locate in the wild.
