Our research focuses on examining the function of song in the Calypte hummingbirds using song playback. This coming season we will be continuing research that was initiated in the spring of 2007 in Anza Borrego State Park. We wish to expand our research to a second study location, the area around the Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center. In January-March 2008 we will scout for territories of male Costa's and Anna's hummingbirds. We will record these birds singing on their territories. Playback trials will be conducted March-April of 2008. Each male will be subject to four playback trials--house finch song (heterospecific non-competitor), Costa's/Anna's song (heterospecific competitor), neighbor, and stranger song. Song playback will be five minutes in length. All bird behaviors will be noted five minutes prior to playback, during playback, and five minutes after playback. The trials for each male will be at least one hour apart. Responses compared among trials will be amount of time subject spends singing, closest approach of subject to the speaker, and amount of time subject spends within five meters of the speaker.
