Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center

My class will be given an introduction to the perennial flora at Deep Canyon, and we will make physiological measurements on a range of species, including Larrea tridentata, Encelia farinosa, Agave deserti, Yucca schidigera, Prunus spp., Fouquieria splendens, and a few others. We will be making non-destructive measurements of transpiration and chlorophyll fluorescence, in addition to measurements of plant water potential that will involve a small amount of leaf removal (2-3 leaves or sections of leaf per plant). In addition, we would like to collect 1-2 leaves per species for subsequent determination of dry weight and surface area back at Occidental.
