Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve

Students will use sweep-netting techniques to collect insects in open grassy areas. For this trip, we will be using 4-wd trucks rented from taps to move students between collecting sites along the road in the reserve. The purpose of this lab is to teach students how to use basic insect collecting equipment (nets, aspirators, and collection vials). We do not plan to manipulate the environment in any other way. Students have been instructed to avoid certain insects of potential conservation concern (e.g., bumble bees). Collected insects will be removed from the remove and preserved in student research collections. We plan to use these collections to establish a basic insect survey of the reserve area(s).
