From Friday 21st to Sunday April, 23rd 2017, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center (UROC) is hosting a cohort of 20 transfer students from Canada College (Bay Area). This annual program during which the transfer students get immersed into the full UC Merced experience on Bobcat Day and through the week end, serves as a way to connect transfer students in the STEM from other California Colleges to our beautiful campus. It is an opportunity to meet students at UC Merced who have also gone through the transferring process from a Community College to a 4-year university, and to receive tips from the Admissions office, and other critically important resources on campus. We seize this visit to show our guests the beauty of the central valley by offering tours and nature hikes in Yosemite National Park, the Vernal Pools, downtown Merced, historic downtown Mariposa and so on. Last year, we took the students to Yosemite and they loved the experience. Unfortunately, this year, weather conditions and park closure do not allow for another hike. We are applying for a visit to the Vernal Pools to introduce our guests to the beauty of nature and the wildlife, and we hope to instill in them why it is critical to preserve our ecosystem and make conscious efforts toward it. These students are future leaders, inventors, policy makers and world influencers, and as such should be aware of the impact they can make and the role they play in creating a sustainable future.
