Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve

This project aims to develop/integrate a methane sensing payload that will be placed upon a small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS). The study will be unobtrusive to the Merced Vernal Pools and Grasslands reserve. The project is a joint effort between UC Merced, JPL NASA, PG&E and the Pipeline Research Council International. Small amounts of methane will be released from a controlled methane source to be detected by the developed methane sensor while in flight. The Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve is a perfect testbed for such research due to the fact that admittance is highly controlled and the small amount of erected structures. MESA Lab possesses a Certificate of Authorization (COA) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly the aircrafts to be used in this study in the airspace above the Reserve. This research will aid in detection methods for pipeline gas leaks not only throughout California, but nationally and internationally.
