With the development of modern transit systems to once-remote places, the number of families travelling to high-altitude increases each year. Current travel guidelines for safe ascent rates are based on acclimatization profiles observed in adults, yet little research has focused on the safety of the child. Control mechanisms of ventilation and blood flow differ between children and adults, which likely create developmental differences in the rate and trajectory of acclimatization to high altitude. We aim to characterize and describe ventilatory and circulatory acclimatization in children over a week-long sojourn at high altitude, comparing measures of respiration, cerebral blood flow, and pulmonary artery pressure between children and adults at rest and during exercise. This project will take place in the Summer of 2019, with baseline testing occurring at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna Canada, followed by a week-long stay between 3000-3800 meters in the White Mountains of eastern California. The ascent will include a stay at the Crooked Creek and then Barcroft stations , of the White Mountain Research Center, and will be the longest and most thorough investigation of high-altitude acclimatization in children to date.
