We have two objectives for the summer 2018 deployment: 1.) to measure the radio backgrounds at WRMS and assess they are manageable (i.e. can be masked in either time or direction such that we are dominated by sky or thermal noise) and 2.) to reduce the transient backgrounds enough to trigger on and record signals from on cosmic rays. We plan to visit three sites for measuring the radio backgrounds: 1) the Observatory, 2) Barcroft Station, and 3.) Summit Station. At each site and for the duration of the site visit, we will set up a spectrum analyzer and transient detector consisting of 1-4 antennas and associated electronics. The expected power requirements are ~700 W per channel, and up to 1.4 kW at any given time. The antennas are roughly 1 m x 1 m x 1m and will either be mounted on tripods that we bring with us or on the ground. We require a radio quiet site, out of view of the HF transmitters. We will deploy a programmable phased array of 4-8 receivers at one of the three candidate sites: Summit, Barcroft, or the Observatory. Over the course of the following year and via the network connection, we will tune our software and firmware to reject background transients and to trigger on cosmic rays. Each antenna is ~ 1 m x 1 m x 1m and would ideally be deployed out of the field of view of the network transmitters. The receiver electronics require 55 W of power, preferably 120 VAC and network connection.
