This is our main sampling trip in which we will remove small soil samples from around 50 dead bristlecone stumps and snags, and 50 sample points in the scrub community adjacent to the dead groves. We will use this material for greenhouse bioassay experiments at UC Berkeley. At each dead tree or scrub sample location we will remove 600ml of soil with small hand trowels. Total depth of our soil samples will be ~15 cm. These small pits will be < 10cm across. The minor soil disturbance created will be remediated immediately after sampling by covering with rocks and gravel from the area. We have just applied for a permit from Inyo Natl. Forest, and I will send that application to you.
