Each year, IoES hosts a course led by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Environment and Sustainability, Mark Gold, entitled Leadership in Water Management. This class is designed for third- and fourth-year undergraduates in a variety of disciplines along with graduate students in the Environmental Science and Engineering doctorate program. It is a unique course and a favorite among many students due to the fact that a large component of the course is providing real-world tangible examples of water management using case studies, guest lectures from professionals working at diverse levels in water management along with highly-impactful in-the-field learning. In this way, students learn specific components of water management from the people actually doing the work and are able to see it first hand. This year, we plan to provide the students the chance to directly see and experience the water supply chain for Los Angeles through a weekend field trip that follows LA water from source to distribution. They will visit the Owens Valley one of the sources of Los Angeles water by utilizing UCLAs White Mountain Research Center Owens Valley Station that is designed for these types of experiences. We will arrange educational tours led by experts in each of the following places Owens Lake, Mono Lake, the Owens River restoration project and the LA aqueduct (and well even show them two movies on LA water politics - Chinatown and Rango - at night). In a place like Los Angeles (and in a state like California) the need for emerging leaders who have a complete understanding of the many urban, environmental and economic requirements placed on our water resources could not be more important. This field trip opportunity is a truly unique mechanism for directly teaching students about these conflicting demands, along with providing them a complete picture of how water is sourced and distributed (and the environmental and societal fallout of major water planning decisions).
