UCI - Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center
17 Oct, 09 PM - 20 Oct, 01 PM
Students will conduct an ant foraging observation lab. Instructors will locate several mounds of the ant species Messor pergandei on the reserve. Students will observe foraging ants which are polymorphic in size. Students will ask whether size polymorphism is an adaptation to optimally forage for seeds of varying sizes by comparing the sizes of ants foraging large and small seeds that are supplemented at varying distances from the ant mounds.
