UCI - Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center

I plan to use the Steele/Burand Research Center, specifically a researcher apartment, as a base camp to conduct my field research roughly from April 1 - May 31, 2017. This is the active breeding season for the flat-tailed horned lizard (Phrynosoma mcallii). I am a postdoctoral fellow at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution). I currently have an MOU to collect tail/toe clips for DNA samples in the state of California and I am working on renewing permits to do the same in Mexico. I will not be collecting anything on the reserve itself. I am looking into the possibility of collecting in the State Park although few if any populations of P. mcallii are known within the park boundaries - most are farther east on BLM or military land. I have been involved with the Anza-Borrego Foundation since 2012 when I received the Howie Wier Memorial Grant as a graduate student at San Diego State University. Since then I attended three natural history conferences at the Steele/Burnand center (and the Borrego Springs resort) hosted by the Anza-Borrego Foundation. I plan to collect samples in the mornings and afternoons at field sites nearby, sometimes camping for a few days at a time in more remote areas such as Mexico, but it would be nice to have the facility to return to, because on off-days I still need a quiet space with internet access to write and analyze data. I appreciated the clean, neat, quiet, professional facilities that the research center has to offer. I really enjoyed staying at the research center and hope to be a conscientious guest with no impact on other reserve activities other than to socialize with other scientists and students.
