Blue Oak Ranch Reserve

Over the summer of 2016, I plan to bring an undergraduate archaeological field school out to the reserve to conduct archaeological survey and excavation as a part of my larger dissertation project. An archaeological field school is a project that is organized partly to train the next generation of archaeologists and to introduce students to new methods of survey and excavation. It is also arranged to conduct real scientific research, and is usually affiliated with academic departments that have large archaeological branches. The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis has a long held tradition of conducting annual archaeological field schools during the summer months between spring and winter quarters. Each year, the department selects a graduate student as a director, who is then in charge of researching, scouting and selecting locations suitable for both learning and conducting his or her own research. During our stay at Blue Oak Ranch Reserve, we hope to survey land, record sites and excavate at CA-SCL-330. As I will also be the director of the 2017 field school, my hopes are returning the following summer to continue my research at CA-SCL-330, and possibly other locations around the ranch recorded by the class this coming field season.
