Blue Oak Ranch Reserve

From June 20th - July 8th, 2016 myself, two other directors and a group of undergraduate students will set up camp at Blue Oak Ranch Reserve, where we will conduct field survey and excavation over the course of three weeks as a part of U.C. Davis's annual Archaeological Field School. An archaeological field school is a project that is organized partly to train the next generation of archaeologists and to introduce students to new methods of survey and excavation. It is also arranged to conduct real scientific research, and is usually affiliated with academic departments that have large archaeological branches. The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis has a long held tradition of conducting annual archaeological field schools during the summer months between spring and winter quarters. Each year, the department selects a graduate student as a director, who is then in charge of researching, scouting and selecting locations suitable for both learning and conducting his or her own research. Over the course of six weeks, students will participate in almost every aspect of the archaeological process. From survey and mapping to excavation and curation, students will have the chance to invest time in a project that will equip them with a remarkable set of skills that they can then apply to the professional world of archaeology.
