The proposed research on Gentianopsis simplex at Sagehen Creek is part of a larger project that includes all species in the genus Gentianopsis from locations throughout the Northern hemisphere. I will use DNA sequencing techniques and a variety of analytical methods to determine phylogenetic relationships among all species in the genus and to evaluate levels of genetic diversity within key North American species. Here, I am requesting permission to collect material from the one species of Gentianopsis (G. simplex) that grows at Sagehen Creek. The amount of material needed is very small (1-2 leaves per plant, or less than 5 grams, from a maximum of 12 plants). In addition, I would also like permission to collect one herbarium specimen (one plant) to use as a voucher. If necessary, I can photograph a plant and use that as a voucher instead. Care will be taken to insure that material is collected only from larger populations. These collections should have no impact on the populations of this species. I plan on visiting Sagehen in early July and again in mid August. Collecting the material described above should take less than one day. I will be accompanied by one colleague, Paul Groff, and my son. There will be no experimentation or manipulation of plants. As a result, there should be minimal impact on the vegetation of the area. At this time, it is difficult for me to state the exact dates that we would arrive. If permission is granted to collect this material, I would appreciate it if the permit would be valid from July 1st through August 15th although, again, we would not spend the entire time at Sagehen.
