These workshops are presented to raise funds in support of the CSUC Biological Sciences Herbarium. Two instructors will lead a group of up to 20 participants on an all-day tour of the facility's meadow/fen system. Carl Wishner (emphasizing bryophytes/liverworts/fen ecology) is familiar with the site. John Dittes (emphasizing landscape setting/meadow ecology/vascular plants)will travel to the site with Carl prior to the workshop to become more familiar with the setting/flora. We will not require the use of any facilities, other than parking areas. We will travel on foot, using existing trails/pathways to the degree possible. We will emphasize minimizing foot/trampling impacts when the group explores particularly sensitive wetland habitats that are not immediately next to trails; "clustering" will be discouraged. Carl will be taking small pinches of bryophytes/liverworts to pass around for instruction/field identification. Similarly, John may pick small samples of select "locally common" vascular plants to share with the group. Carl and John together have over 50 combined years of experience working as consulting botanists/biologists in the field. We are familiar with rare taxa that might be present. We will stress a strong conservation ethic and pay attention to limiting potential workshop-related disturbances. If you have and questions are particular concerns, please feel free to call or e-mail. Best regards, John Dittes
