Sagehen Creek Field Station

This sampling of Saghen Creek is part of a larger sampling effort by the USGS to characterize ecological conditions at Hydrologic Benchmark network(HBN) sites in the conterminous US where wadeable collection methods can be used. Physical, chemical, and biological characterization will be conducted at each 31 HBN sites. National Water Quality Assessment program (NAWQA) protocols will be followed for algae, benthic invertebrates, fish, and habitat. All streams have active USGS streamflow gages. The proposed work would extend those data collection efforts to active HBN sites in the conterminous US. In addition to strengthening the multipurpose network by characterizing current ecological conditions at these sites, this sampling would set the stage for potential future ecological monitoring. Further, it would contribute to development of a publicly available and readily usable set of biological assessment tools such as regionally based indices of biological condition (IBIs) and predictive models (O/E), that would allow practitioners at any spatial scale to assess aquatic communities in a regional and national context, and promote more consistency in ecological assessments.
