The emphasis of this project is increase the Department of Fish and Games understanding of the presence, distribution, and ecology of the Pacific fisher, American marten, Sierra Nevada red fox, and other mesocarnivores in the Southern Cascades and Sierra Nevada. Surveys for mesocarnivores are being conducted in portions of the central and northern Sierra Nevada and the southern Cascades. These surveys are designed to detect Pacific fisher, American marten, and Sierra Nevada red fox in areas of their geographic range where they are considered rare or possibly extirpated. They will also provide ancillary information on the distribution of other species of interest to the Department (e.g., wolverine, raccoon, ringtail, gray fox, striped skunk, and spotted skunk).
