This project is an exploratory field study to address the major research needs identified by Earman and Dettinger (2008). Their report described a number of methods appropriate to use for long-term monitoring of groundwater recharge in the mountains of California (e.g., repeated groundwater age determination, analysis of flow data from paired stream gauges, use of gravity techniques). Some of the methods identified are relatively well-proven (e.g., paired stream gauge methods), and should be straightforward to implement in possible future monitoring networks. However, other methods (e.g., gravity monitoring) are unproven in that either they have not been attempted at all, or they have not been applied successfully in the type of mountainous terrain that is the main source of California?s water resources. Therefore, we propose to assess the feasibility of applying relatively unproven methods that are of potential value, in addition to attempting to advance a powerful method (i.e., stable isotopes) for determining snowmelt influence on groundwater recharge.
