I am manipulating ant and aphid presence on sagebrush plants in order to determine the effect of ants on aphid population dynamics and the effect of aphids on ant foraging behavior. In addition, I am interested in the effect of the interaction between ants and aphids on other arthropods, such as lacewing bugs. Lacewing larvae and adults are aphid predators, and ants have been shown to remove larval lacewing predators from plants with aphids. I am interested in the effect of ants on lacewing adult oviposition choice and lacewing egg predation. I will remove ants from plants manually and then use a stick barrier at the base of the plant to prevent recolonization by ants. I will remove aphids from plants manually. I will maintain these treatments throughout the season and monitor changes in ant and aphid densities and species composition of the sagebrush arthropod community on experimental plants.
