This project seeks to revisit select sites in the Sierra Nevada to assess change in bird and mammal diversity, as well as build a baseline estimate of diversity for future studies. This work follows up on work done by Joseph Grinnell and colleagues who, between 1900 and 1940, surveyed birds and mammals at sites throughout California. We have been resurveying these and nearby sites since 2003. We have found some changes in diversity in the Yosemite region. We have expanded, with NSF funding, to examine the Lassen region, White Mountains, southern Sierra Nevadas, and now the I-80 area. Independence Lake was one of the earlier sites visited, having been surveyed in 1909 and 1910 by the museum's founder. Sagehen itself was not a historical site, but many specimens were collected from around Hobart Mills. Given that Sagehen is now a UC Reserve, it would make an excellent place to set a benchmark for future work. Bird work involves primarily observations, but also some mistnetting. The mammal work involves primarily live trapping of all mammals smaller than marmots, with selective take of some mammals for museum preservation. We would use a number of traps such as macabees for gophers, small (4 inch wide) pitfalls for shrews, Sherman traps for most small mammals, and tomahawks for medium to large rodents. We do not plan to use firearms for mammals. We would also collecte a few representive herps (garter snakes, fence lizards) as allowed, and as permitted.
