Conspecific attraction influences habitat selection and consequently the population demographics of a population. Willow Flycatchers in the central Sierra Nevada are an ideal study organism to examine the theoretical and conservation implications of conspecific attraction. Their life history traits and population distribution in the Sierra Nevada are in concordance with conspecific attraction theory. Furthermore, our long-term research program initiated in 1997 provides essential historical and comparative information. Results from a pilot study in 2007 suggest a positive response of Willow Flycatchers to conspecific vocalizations. The strength of the response to conspecific vocalizations should vary with age and reproductive experience. If differences in habitat among study sites are negligible then reproductive success at experimental sites should be similar to success at control sites from the long-term demography study. Conspecific attraction may be an important mechanism for territory settlement in Willow Flycatchers thereby necessitating different conservation and restoration approaches.
