The objective of this course is to introduce new Ecology students the concepts and techniques in ecology through exposure to the ecological diversity of California. This will be accomplished by taking field trips to several areas centered around the White Mountain Research Station in Eastern California. Introduction to the Lake Tahoe ecosystem will highlight subalpine aquatic systems and state of the art laboratory facilities at the UC Davis Tahoe Research Laboratory. A visit to Mono Lake will demonstrate techniques in long-term ecological research and its importance in understanding plant community dynamics. A survey of California forest communities including bristle cone pine, Sierra mixed conifer and subalpine forests will focus on the effects of environmental gradients on the distribution of vegetation types in California. Finally, applied ecological concepts and the importance of ecosystem management will be discussed during a visit to Yosemite National Park. The course will be instructed by several University of California faculty, integrating ecological theory and practice and facilitating student-faculty interactions.
