The long term fixed objective of this research project is to make geologic maps of the Independence Lake and Hobart Mills 7.5' quadrangles. In summer 2007, undergraduate geology majors will map the geology of the Sagehen Creek and Independence Lake basins at a scale of 1:12,000. Map units will include bedrock and alluvial units, subdivided according to the granitic, volcanic, sedimentary, glacial, and fluvial deposits that we have mapped directly south of the subject area. A GIS compilation of the students' maps will be prepared at a scale of 1:24,000, just as we have already done for the satellite reserves. We expect to have about 20 students, one faculty instructor, two graduate student teaching assistants, a cook, and a swamper for a total of about 25 people. We have the camping infrastructure to establish a camp for so many people and would like to place that camp at the Sagenhen Campground if facilities are limited or not available at the Sagehen Creek field station. We are able to generate our own electricity, too, if necessary. We expect to have 3-4 4W drive University suburbans plus a vehicle for the cook and swamper. We shall work 6 days per week with two full days off during the 3-week period. In the field each day the students will map the geology of the subject area with as much impact on the land as that of a bird watcher, with the exception that selected rock samples will be collected for further study in camp and back at the University. We foresee no conflicts with other programs. In fact, this geologic research will provide considerable support for the on-going hydrologic studies in the basins.
