The great gray owl (Strix nebulosa) is one of the largest and most elusive owls found within the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It was listed as state endangered in 1980 due to apparent population declines (Winter 1980). It is well understood that the owls utilize meadow systems for foraging of their primary prey species, and the immediate surrounding forest for perching, roosting, and nesting activities (Winters 1982). Forest density, presence of snags, and tree type and size (Winter 1980), as well as specific meadow characteristics (Green 1995), are known to influence optimal site selection. Ecological factors such as distribution, habitat requirements and use, predator-prey relation, nest site selection, hunting and calling behavior, and telemetry tracking have been explored in relative detail throughout the California since the late 1970?s. Although, most of these studies have taken place within the owl?s core range in Stanislaus National Forest, portions of Sierra National Forest, and Yosemite National Park. Sporadic sightings have occurred outside of this area, and no explanation has been offered or explored as to why the owls select for habitat within certain regions of the Sierra. No concerted survey effort has been conducted north or south of the traditional range. It is imperative for the survival of the species to understand fully its entire distribution and associated habitat requirements. The effort contained in this study will provide such information by extending the survey effort outside of the known range of the great gray owl and collecting essential data on habitat characteristics. In addition, information gained through the span of the project can be used to further understand aspects of the species, assess the current habitat model proposed by Beck and Craig (1991), and ultimately aide in implementation of new and improved management plans throughout the Sierra.
