Sagehen Creek Field Station

We propose to bring a group of 7th graders from Adams Middle school to study natural history at Sagehen. Activities may include nature hikes, scavenger hunts, bird watching, collecting and observing insects with a variety of techniques (sweep nets, aerial nets, pitfall traps, night lighting), live trapping small mammals, Sampling aquatic insect in the creek, and collecting and identifying common plants. Only small numbers of plants or insects will be collected and so collecting activities will have minimal impact on populations. In addition, we are developing a new field activity to measure and age trees using cores and counting tree rings. We plan to do this at Hastings, but if permitted, could also try it at Sagehen. All other activities are observational and therefore have little or no impact on populations. This group will be led by 2 graduate students familiar with the site (Dan Schmidt and Jenny McGuire), and will be accompanied by the classroom teacher.
