I will determine how females adjust their investment in offspring and alter mating paterns and offspring sex ratio based on the attractiveness of their mate. Females should be willing to invest more if mated to attractive males because they will produce more successful offspring than if mated to an unattractive mate. Investment could be adjusted directly through the number of eggs females lay or through how much care they provide to their young. Females could also seek out extra-pair mates to improve offspring quality or adjust the number of sons versus daughters they produce (sons benefit more from a father's attractiveness). The methods involved include banding, measuring, and taking blood samples from adults, finding and monitoring nests, and conducting nest observations. To manipulate male attractiveness I will use a cut-and-paste technique that hs been successfully used in many bird species, including my study population in 2003.
