Kenneth S. Norris Rancho Marino Reserve

Many marine organisms contain a suite of natural sunscreening compounds, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). We are currently investigating how these MAAs protect organisms against ultraviolet radiation (UVR). We are specifically examining how MAAs protect a model invertebrate, the purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, during early embryonic development. Many sea urchins aquire MAAs from their algal diets. We are currently surveying the ovaries of S. purpuratus at multiple sites and depths to determine whether there is variation in the concentrations and tyes of MAAs. We would like to include sea urchins from the Rancho Marino Reserve as one of our intertidal collection sites.
