We would like to bring the fish biology class at UCSB to Rancho Marino in order to allow our students to collect and identify intertidal fishes in their natural habitat. We will use handnets to collect many different species of intertidal fishes (e.g. sculpins, gunnels, sticklebacks, surfperch, keplfish, etc.). Fish will be kept alive in large plastic buckets filled with seawater while students use taxonomic keys to identify the species found in the intertidal area at Rancho Marino. Fish will then be returned to their natural habitat following identification. Species lists will be saved and made available to Rancho Marino if desired. The selection of field sites will be left to the discretion of the Rancho Marino staff so as to not interfer with other ongoing research projects at the reserve.
