The Bren School of Environmental Science and Management of UC Santa Barbara held its first annual PhD student retreat at the Kenneth S. Norris Rancho Marino Reserve in September 2013 and it was a huge success. We are hoping to build on this success and hold this event again in 2014. We would like to arrive on Sep 27 and leave Sep 29. We would like to arrange a tour of the reserve, if possible (we did so last year and it was successful) and do some other sight-seeing in the area, including hiking in Big Sur and beach exploration. We would like to set up tents on the reserve site and use the kitchen facilities. Of course, we will do our best to leave the reserve as we found it. The purpose of this retreat is to build our student community and help integrate the incoming cohort of students, one of the largest groups in the Bren School's history. As an interdisciplinary program, students have few opportunities to engage with one and other in meaningful ways and we are hoping to use this retreat and the start-of-school-year energy to help get the 2014/2015 year off to a great start. The retreat last year served to jump-start other academically-related events throughout the year simply by getting students to talk and share their interests. In addition, many students join the Bren School from outside California or outside the U.S. and this event can serve as a wonderful introduction to the UC Reserve System and California's natural beauty. We are unable to give an exact number of attendees at this point, but around 30 people is our current estimate.
