Kenneth S. Norris Rancho Marino Reserve

This is a continuation of breeding work started in 1999. The goal is to complete two breeding plans (diallels) of controlled cross seed between several identified parent trees in the Cambria population of Monterey pines. Future testing of seedlings from the crosses in these diallels will aid in a better understanding of the heritability of genetic resistance to pitch canker. Three trees along the upper edge of the property are being used in the diallels. All pollens used in the crosses come from other trees in the Cambria population of Monterey pines and represent crosses that can occur naturally. Cones from these crosses will be collected and the seed extracted for future genetic testing.
