PISCO's subtidal monitoring program and the PISCO / CRANE survey effort provides information critical to our understanding of kelp forest ecosystems as well as informing approaches for their management and conservation. Monitoring studies describe patterns of natural variation in species abundance, community structure and ecosystem function and the biological and physical processes that underlie such variation. Knowledge of this natural variability is fundamental for identifying changes induced by human activities in the coastal environment. Our program is the first large scale, long-term kelp forest monitoring program of its kind. The subtidal PISCO / CRANE effort in the Kenneth S. Norris Rancho Marino Reserve area is focused in the kelp forest immediately offshore of the reserve at a site spanning approximately 700 meters of shoreline starting just south of White Rock in 20 meters of water. Survey efforts are aimed characterizing densities of approximately 100 species of fishes, invertebrates, and macro alga?s as well as substrate relief, and general ecosystem structure and change. Additional sites in the Cambria area provide potential comparisons to the White Rock site. Sites and are selected to inform marine management both locally and regionally. Little direct impact on the reserve should be expected as no land other than the drive and immediate area around the trailer and RV will be used by our effort. Boats will all be launched outside of the reserve, and no intertidal areas will be transited within the reserve. Divers will be outside of reserve boundaries when collecting data.
