A recent ecological niche model (ENM) developed by Loarie et al. (2008; PNAS) estimated that within a century up to 69% of endemic plant species in the California Floristic Province will experience range reductions of more than 80%. However, if populations are well adapted to local environments, the overall range of individual species may decline even more rapidly because ENMs assume that that every population of a species has the capacity to survive in any climate occupied by the species as a whole. Presently, we do not know if this assumption is correct because we have limited information about the current physiological status of most CA native plants. For this study I will be collecting seeds of Heteromeles arbutifolia at multiple UC Reserves and growing them in a common garden at UC Berkeley to examine if physiological differences are adaptations or acclimation.
