I am looking at the effects of morphological variability in Mastocarpus papillatus. The project consists of both single and seasonal sampling at multiple sites along the central California coast. At each site replicate 10 cm diameter polyvinylchloride "cores" of 100% cover of M. papillatus are are sampled. Abiotic measurements will be taken above and below the algal canopy, including temperature, irradiance, and humidity. Everything will be removed from within the core (including all invertebrates and algae) and taken back to Moss Landing Marine Labs for further assessment. Surface area, length, and biomass of M. papillatus, as well as changes in macroinvertebrate assemblages among morphological characteristics will be determined. Data will be analyzed for relationships between morphological characteristics and changes in sub-canopy microclimate, and how this relates to macroinvertebrate assemblages among cores. These relationships will also be analyzed for differences among latitudes, and among seasons.
