Antioch University, Santa Barbara has a strong Ecological Literacy focus for candidates working toward the CA multiple subject teaching credential. Our goal is to give our students an overnight experience outdoors with workshops given by experts who share nature with children. We hope to inspire our student teachers to give their own students opportunities to study nature in natural surroundings. By giving them a strong basis for environmental education and what can be done with children, we envision that our students will be more likely to use the outdoors, including opportunities such as the Sedgwick Reserve for environmental study. Our object is to have little or no impact on the natural ecosystem of the reserve and to teach our students how to do that with their own students. We want to invite the upper class of the SYV Family School to join us for the mid day lunch and early afternoon workshops. The reason for this is to have our students experience how a school teaches young children to be ecologically literate in the natural world. We had a successful experience at the reserve last spring and we would like to build on that for this year.
