Sedgwick Reserve

In a block design experiment I will examine the factors that limit the establishment and growth of exotic grasses on serpentine outcrops (hummocks). Within each 33cm x 33cm block four plots will be established; three of which will be seeded with Avena barbara, Hordeum murinum, or Bromus hordeacous. The fourth plot will consist of native background vegetation and will allow comparison of native response to exotic response. Fertilizer treatments will be addition of nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and water, a combination of all, and a control (no fertilizer or water). To examine the role of competition with natives on exotic growth an additional set of treatments will be applied to plots cleared of native vegetation. All treatments will be replicated eight times over at least two serpentine hummocks. At the end of the growing season (approximately June 2006) plants will be harvested and measurements will be taken for seed production and aboveground biomass. Target plants will be harvested prior to loss of seed. All seeds were collected from Midland, adjacent to the reserve. Although specific plot areas have yet to be determined, plots will be scattered over several serpentine outcrops. All outcrops will be adjacent to each other.
