The purpose of this environmental study trip to Sedgwick Reserve is to introduce our teacher candidates to the available resources in this area and to stimulate their interest in using natural resources for environmental studies and art. Students will be interested in learning about the birds, ecosystems, geology, botany and biology, astronomy to increase their scientific understandings and to inspire them to integrated science and art for their own students. We will want to have guided workshops in these topics with docents from the Reserve from 9-12 on 3/24. We will invite the Santa Ynez Valley Family School students to share lunch with us while they tell about the Environmental Studies they have done at their school. Our hope is that with youngsters telling their stories, our teacher candidates will be inspired to similar work with their own classes. We propose to use the available landscape for inspiration for art and observation skills in the afternoon. We will set up several stations for different inquiry and explorations to do with the integration of art and science for curriculum units appropriate for K-12 classrooms. We propose to invite the UCSB AStronomers to visit with our students in the evening after dinner 3/24. On Friday, 3/25, after breakfast cooked outside, we propose to complete the activities from the afternoon before and begin a closure event that weaves together what was learned. We would be open and welcome any docent interested in participating in this portion of our program. We expect our students to take at least one hike either in small groups or in partners during the day and a half trip. This trip is part of our environmental studies/ ecological literacy requirement for the Antioch Teacher Education Program. We look forward to working with Sedgwick Reserve Staff to inspire respect and care of our natural environment in a new group of teacher candidates.
