Sedgwick Reserve

The activities described below are tentative and may or may not take place during the first visit. The primary goal of the first visit will be to gain familiarity with the system, determine feasibility of the proposed methods, and gather information for designing additional questions and methods. At Sedgwick Reserve, I intend to establish 6 10m x 10m plots marked with flags (or alternatively, place markers for 20m transects), with half of the plots in a recently burned region of coastal sage scrub and half outside of this area, with plots randomly distributed within these broader regions. For the area (or each plot if applicable), I will obtain any information on climate, fire history, and human influence from reserve records where available. In the field, I will note GPS coordinates, take a soil sample, and record information on presence and abundance of plant species. For selected native, common species (e.g. Artemesia californica, Lotus scoparius, Salvia mellifera, Eriogonum fasciculatum), I will collect seeds, leaves, and twigs for use in growth in a greenhouse and flammability experiments at UC Davis. I will also measure community and individual level traits of these selected species, including post-fire resprouting, stem thickness, and canopy structure.
