Organisms to be collected are adult female field crickets (Gryllus lineaticeps) and adult female black widows (Latrodectus hesperus). Collection for the female crickets will be done by playing male calls, which have been shown to successfully attract females. The black widows have been collected from the Sedgwick site before using glass vials dropped over the female, who easily retreat to the back of the vial. Though there should be no risk of introducing non-endemic genetic material, clothes will be washed in case any lab cricket residue remains on them. Any and all materials brought out to the field will be brought back from the field. I won't be conducting experimental manipulations while in the field, save for some quick field observations. To ensure that the induction of predation cues has the potential to work, I will be bringing out to the field some filter paper and small plastic containers. I will place some black widow silk on filter paper (from the black widows I successfully collect), then place in the container. A female field cricket will then be introduced to the container and her behavior will be compared to female field crickets not exposed to those cues. This will give me preliminary observational data on any possible behavioral changes in the crickets due to predation cues.
